Snacks – Make it through the day

It’s Sunday. What are you taking for lunch tomorrow?

I agree with the research that shows eating several small meals throughout the day is more beneficial than stuffing yourself three times a day. Unfortunately, sometimes, I don’t properly plan ahead so when it’s time to pack my lunch in a hurry, and I leave for work with too little food to really get through my day.

I’m not saying you need to pack the entire contents of your refrigerator into your lunch bag. But if you’re only bringing a sandwich and a yogurt, you WILL be hungry and one of two things will happen: 1. you’ll either give in when temptation strikes and get something unhealthy from the nearest vending machine, convenience store, or coffee shop; or 2. you’ll suffer through the rest of the day feeling hungry and irritable, and your body will actually burn calories less efficiently than if you were fueling it.

Please know, I am NOT judging with the example I just gave – – I speak from experience! I have done it myself! But when we make a selection at our moment of weakness, most of the time we won’t make the most healthy choice. We’ll pick something based on emotions.

So if you’re like me and you need to pack lunch in a hurry, try portioning out some snacks on Sunday before the work week. See if it helps you!

Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

• hard boil eggs

• yogurt – either individual containers, or buy a quart and portion into small containers

• cottage cheese – low-fat

• string cheese

• oranges – this time of year they’re appearing on sale in your nearby grocery store! Super portable!

• P90X protein bars

• apple slices with peanut butter

• carrots with hummus
